Protests and Fire at Jatiya Party Office in Dhaka
In Dhaka, Bangladesh, the central office of the Jatiya Party, part of the coalition led by ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, was set on fire following clashes on Thursday night. The Jatiya Party, founded by the late President Hussain Muhammad Ershad, has been part of the Grand Alliance and participated in past elections. Protesters opposing Sheikh Hasina were angered by the Jatiya Party’s plan to hold a rally, leading to clashes in the Kakrail area of Dhaka.
Protesters, under the Chhatra Sramik Janata banner, marched with torches, and the fire service was called to extinguish the fire at the Jatiya Party office. Witnesses reported vandalism, including the removal of signboards and defacing of Ershad’s picture. Police and Army were deployed to the scene.
Shakiluzzaman, a leader of the Gono Audhikar Parishad, accused Jatiya Party members of instigating the violence and acting as proxies for the Awami League in past elections. He declared that students, workers, and citizens would prevent any Jatiya Party rallies. The Jatiya Party has yet to officially respond.
Two months prior, a student-led movement ousted Sheikh Hasina, leading to an interim government headed by Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus.
