Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Visit to Laos
Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently concluded a two-day visit to Laos, where he participated in the 21st ASEAN-India and 19th East Asia Summits. During his visit, he met with leaders from Laos, Thailand, New Zealand, South Korea, and Japan. The visit was at the invitation of Laos’s Prime Minister, Sonexay Siphandone.
Warm Welcome in Vientiane
Upon arrival in Vientiane, the capital of Laos, PM Modi was welcomed by the Minister of Home Affairs of Laos, Vilayvong Bouddakham, and received a ceremonial Guard of Honour. He also interacted with the Indian diaspora in Vientiane, who were excited to meet him.
Significant Meetings
PM Modi held several important meetings on the sidelines of the summits. He met with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, and Japan’s newly appointed Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba. He also had a bilateral meeting with New Zealand’s Prime Minister Christopher Luxon.
Focus on ASEAN and Indo-Pacific
During the East Asia Summit, PM Modi emphasized India’s commitment to ASEAN unity and the Indo-Pacific vision. He highlighted the revival of Nalanda as part of India’s commitment to the region. The East Asia Summit, initiated in 2005, includes ASEAN Member States, Australia, China, India, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, the US, and Russia.
