Prime Minister Narendra Modi has embarked on a two-day visit to Kazan, Russia, to participate in the 16th BRICS Summit. Before his departure, PM Modi expressed the importance India places on BRICS, highlighting the opportunity for extensive discussions on various global issues. He is attending the summit at the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

PM Modi emphasized the significance of BRICS as a platform for dialogue on global development, climate change, economic cooperation, and cultural exchange. The recent expansion of BRICS with new members has enhanced its inclusivity and global agenda.

The summit, themed ‘Strengthening Multilateralism for Just Global Development and Security,’ is chaired by Russia from October 22-24. PM Modi is expected to hold bilateral meetings with leaders from BRICS member countries and invited guests. This visit marks his second trip to Russia this year, following his attendance at the India-Russia Annual Summit in July.

BRICS, originally formed by Russia, India, and China, expanded to include South Africa in 2010. The group further grew in 2024 with the addition of Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.
