Prime Minister Modi Meets Iran’s President Pezeshkian at BRICS Summit
In Kazan, Russia, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian during the BRICS Summit. This was their first meeting since Pezeshkian became President of Iran in July. India and Iran have a long history of strong ties, sharing economic and security interests. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar visited Iran in January 2024, marking his first visit since Iran joined BRICS in September 2023. He met with Iran’s Foreign Minister Dr. Hossein Amir-Abdollahian to discuss various topics, including the Chabahar port, regional issues, and global conflicts.
India has expressed concern over the escalating security situation in West Asia, urging restraint and protection of civilians. In April, India called for de-escalation and a return to diplomacy amid hostilities between Israel and Iran.
During the summit, PM Modi also met Russian President Vladimir Putin. They shared a warm greeting, highlighting their strong bilateral ties. Modi emphasized the deep friendship between India and Russia, noting his recent visits and the strengthened cooperation following the Annual Summit in Moscow. The 16th BRICS Summit is being hosted in Kazan.
