During the 16th BRICS Leaders’ Summit in Kazan, Russia, Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the importance of addressing climate change as a shared priority among BRICS nations. He thanked President Putin for organizing the summit and welcomed new BRICS members. Modi noted that BRICS now represents 40% of the world’s population and 30% of the global economy.

Modi highlighted India’s initiatives like Mission LiFE and ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ to combat climate change. He also mentioned India’s focus on green growth and climate-resilient infrastructure, citing the International Solar Alliance and the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure as key efforts.

Additionally, Modi discussed the success of India’s Unified Payment Interface (UPI) and called for increased economic cooperation and trade in local currencies among BRICS countries. He shared India’s experience with digital health and the BRICS Vaccine R&D Centre, which enhances health security.

Modi also introduced the ‘Gatishakti’ portal, aimed at improving infrastructure and reducing logistics costs in India, and expressed willingness to share these experiences with BRICS partners.

Unified Payment Interface (UPI) -: UPI is a digital payment system in India that allows people to transfer money instantly using their smartphones. It makes transactions easy and quick without needing cash.

Economic Cooperation -: Economic cooperation means countries working together to improve their economies. This can include trading goods, sharing technology, and investing in each other’s businesses.

Local Currencies -: Local currencies are the money used in a specific country, like the Indian Rupee in India. Trading in local currencies means using each country’s own money instead of international currencies like the US Dollar.
