Prime Minister Modi and President Biden Unite to Fight Cervical Cancer at Cancer Moonshot Event
Wilmington (Delaware), September 22: Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized India’s vision of ‘One Earth One Health’ and announced a USD 7.5 million support for sampling kits, detection kits, and vaccines to fight cervical cancer. This announcement was made during the Cancer Moonshot event in Delaware, organized by US President Joe Biden.
PM Modi highlighted India’s initiatives in combating cervical cancer and expressed India’s readiness to share its experience and expertise. He stressed the importance of an integrated approach involving prevention, screening, diagnosis, and treatment to reduce the cancer burden.
The Cancer Moonshot is a White House initiative aimed at leading the fight against cancer through new collaborations and progress across the oncology community, including federal agencies, private companies, healthcare providers, patient groups, and philanthropies.
PM Modi thanked President Biden for organizing the event, reflecting their shared determination to provide affordable, accessible, and quality healthcare. He mentioned the Quad Vaccine initiative taken during the COVID pandemic and the joint efforts to tackle challenges like cervical cancer within the Quad.
India has developed its own vaccine for cervical cancer and is introducing new treatment protocols with the help of Artificial Intelligence. The country is also running a cost-effective cervical cancer screening program and the world’s largest health insurance scheme, with special centers to provide affordable medicines.
PM Modi announced India’s cooperation in radiotherapy treatment and capacity building, along with a contribution of 40 million vaccine doses for Indo-Pacific countries under GAVI and QUAD initiatives. He emphasized the human-centric approach of the QUAD’s actions.
The Cancer Moonshot has led to significant actions across the US government and from public and private sectors, with over 95 new programs, policies, and resources announced to address five priority actions. The US-India Cancer Moonshot Dialogue, facilitated by the US Embassy in New Delhi, focused on strengthening US-India biomedical research cooperation and developing solutions to improve global health.
