President Biden Discusses Concerns Over North Korea-Russia Ties at APEC Summit

In Lima, Peru, during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit, United States President Joe Biden met with South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba. The leaders discussed the strong ties between their countries and expressed concerns over the cooperation between North Korea and Russia. This meeting comes amid reports of North Korea’s leader, Kim Jong Un, supporting Russia by sending troops and testing long-range ballistic missiles.

The leaders issued a joint statement condemning the military cooperation between North Korea and Russia, which includes munitions and missile transfers. They highlighted the seriousness of this cooperation, especially given Russia’s role as a Permanent Member of the U.N. Security Council. The leaders also reaffirmed their support for Ukraine’s right to self-defense as outlined in the UN Charter.

Recently, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a treaty with North Korea, committing to mutual military assistance. President Biden praised the partnership between Japan and South Korea, noting it would be his last meeting with them. After the APEC Summit, President Biden plans to attend the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
