Police Reject Rally Request by Paschimbanga Chhatro Samaj in Kolkata
The Kolkata Police, led by Additional Commissioner Supratim Sarkar, rejected an application by Paschimbanga Chhatro Samaj to hold a rally called ‘Nabanna Abhiyaan’ on August 27. The group aimed to protest the recent rape and murder of a woman trainee doctor in Kolkata.
Additional Commissioner Sarkar explained that the application was denied because the group did not seek formal permission and provided insufficient details. He stated, “They had announced through social media and the press that they will be undertaking a program called Nabanno Abhiyaan on 27th August, but they did not seek permission, which is a mandatory requirement as far as the High Court directives.”
He added, “We have received two emails from two different organisations, the email that we have received from Paschimbanga Chhatro Samaj is an intimation. It’s not a formal permission letter. They have just intimated that we are going to do that program and in this mail also, they have not revealed the details that are required to be shared with the police for peaceful conducting of the program. Hence, their application has been rejected…Tomorrow there’s a UGC net national level exam. Many candidates from the state will write that exam. Allowing any such congregation will invariably result in traffic disruption which will cause serious inconvenience to the candidates.”
The brutal rape and murder of a woman trainee doctor on the R G Kar Medical College and Hospital premises sparked outrage all over the country. The incident shook the entire nation, and since then several protests have been staged demanding justice for the victim.
Earlier, CBI officials conducted a polygraph test on the arrested accused, Sanjay Roy, in connection with the rape and murder of a female trainee doctor in Kolkata. On August 25, Parimal Dey, a teacher from Alipurduar in West Bengal who was honoured with the Banga Ratna award by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in 2019, has decided to return the award in protest against the state government’s handling of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital rape-murder incident. The trainee doctor was found dead in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9.
