Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk Addresses Migration Challenges with Belarus

Poland’s New Migration Strategy

Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s Announcement

In a significant development, Poland is taking steps to address irregular migration due to rising tensions with Belarus. Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced a temporary suspension of the right to asylum. He criticized Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko and Russian President Vladimir Putin for exploiting the asylum system, which undermines its purpose.

Migration Strategy and European Recognition

Tusk stated, “One of the elements of the migration strategy will be the temporary territorial suspension of the right to asylum.” He plans to seek European recognition for this decision and will present the strategy at a government meeting on October 15.

Migration Challenges in Poland

Since 2021, migration has been a major issue in Poland, with thousands of asylum seekers from countries like Afghanistan, Syria, and Iraq’s Kurdish region attempting to enter through Belarus. Poland shares a 1,300 km border with former Soviet Republics, including Russia, Lithuania, Belarus, and Ukraine.

Transit Routes and Migration Statistics

Poland faces two main migration routes: the ‘Balkan trail’ used by Romanians, Bulgarians, and former Yugoslavia citizens, and a route from Lithuania to Germany used mainly by Asians. Illegal migration numbers have nearly doubled since 1996. Additionally, by mid-March 2024, Poland recorded close to 1.8 million people displaced by the war in Ukraine.
