Strengthening Ties and Offering Aid
Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Nigeria, marking the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister in 17 years. During his visit, he expressed condolences for the lives lost in recent floods and announced 20 tons of humanitarian aid to support relief efforts. This follows an earlier shipment of 15 tons of aid.
In a meeting with Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, PM Modi expressed gratitude for the President’s commitment to strengthening the strategic partnership between India and Nigeria. He highlighted Nigeria’s participation in the G20 Summit and its status as a partner country in BRICS.
PM Modi emphasized the importance of the strategic partnership, covering sectors like defense, energy, economy, technology, health, and education. He acknowledged the role of the Indian community in Nigeria in fostering these relations.
PM Modi was honored with the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON), making him the second foreign dignitary to receive this honor after Queen Elizabeth in 1969. This is the 17th international award conferred to him.
PM Modi’s visit is part of a three-nation tour, including Brazil and Guyana, aimed at strengthening strategic ties based on shared beliefs in democracy and pluralism.
