On September 5, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong visited the semiconductor facility of AEM Holdings Ltd in Singapore. The visit aimed to explore synergies between India and Singapore in semiconductor manufacturing.
Lawrence Wong welcomed PM Modi at the facility, where the two leaders interacted with officials and took pictures with them. This visit is significant for enhancing trade opportunities between the two countries.
Singapore has a well-developed semiconductor industry, and this opens up various opportunities for India. These include collaboration in talent development, knowledge sharing, and encouraging semiconductor companies in Singapore to consider India for expansion. Singapore has players in all segments of the semiconductor value chain, including IC design, assembly, packaging, testing, wafer fabrication, and equipment/raw material production.
During PM Modi's visit, India and Singapore exchanged four significant MoUs. These agreements cover collaboration in digital technologies, the semiconductor sector, health and medicine, and education and skills development. The MoUs were exchanged in the presence of PM Modi and Lawrence Wong at Singapore's Parliament House.
Earlier in the day, PM Modi received a ceremonial welcome at Singapore's Parliament House and signed the visitors' book. He also met with ministers and delegates from both countries. Before arriving in Singapore, PM Modi visited Brunei, where he held talks with Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah.
