Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his wishes to Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama on his 89th birthday. He prayed for the Dalai Lama’s speedy recovery following knee surgery, as well as his continued good health and long life.

The 14th Dalai Lama, known to the Tibetan people as Gyalwa Rinpoche, is the highest spiritual leader and head of Tibet. His birthday was celebrated by followers at the Kalchakra Monastery in Siliguri, West Bengal. They honored him by celebrating July 6 as the ‘Universal Day of Compassion’ to recognize his contributions to global peace and harmony.

Large crowds gathered at the Kalchakra Monastery to offer prayers, cut birthday cakes, and perform cultural celebrations. Similarly, the Tibet Monastery in Shimla echoed with special prayers, and Buddhist monks offered prayers in front of the statue of Lord Buddha. They celebrated by cutting a 25-pound cake and conducting a special puja for the Dalai Lama’s long life.

The Dalai Lama, renowned globally for his teachings on compassion and peace, is currently recovering from a successful knee surgery in the United States. He was discharged from the hospital on June 29.
