Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar’s Statement

In Islamabad, Pakistan’s Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar announced that the new Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) will be named by October 25. The announcement is expected to be made a day or two before the current Chief Justice, Justice Qazi Faez Isa, retires. The government plans to issue the notification for the oath-taking ceremony on October 24.

Political Reactions and Amendments

The main opposition party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), led by Imran Khan, has urged the government to appoint Justice Isa’s successor promptly. PTI supports Justice Mansoor Ali Shah as the next CJP and opposes a proposed constitutional amendment that could extend Justice Isa’s term.

Law Minister Tarar mentioned that a sub-committee of legal experts is reviewing the amendment, which may be passed before or after Justice Isa’s retirement. The special parliamentary committee, chaired by Syed Khursheed Shah of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), is discussing the amendment with representatives from all political parties.
