Pakistan Imposes Section 144 in Rawalpindi for SCO Summit

The government of Punjab in Pakistan has enforced Section 144 in Rawalpindi until October 17 to ensure law and order during the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit. This section prohibits political gatherings and demonstrations for a specified period. The SCO meetings will occur in Rawalpindi and Islamabad, with India represented by External Affairs Minister Jaishankar.

The SCO, established in 2001 in Shanghai, China, aims to foster trust and cooperation among member states, including India, Iran, China, Pakistan, and Russia. The summit will also see participation from dialogue partners like Bahrain, Egypt, and the UAE. To ensure smooth proceedings, Pakistan has implemented strict security measures, including deploying army troops in Islamabad and closing marriage halls and restaurants in the twin cities.

Security has been tightened at Adiala Jail, where former Prime Minister Imran Khan is held, restricting visits from his supporters and family. The Punjab government made this decision to protect people and prevent any threats during the summit. The SCO Council of Heads of Government meeting is set for October 15 and 16 in Islamabad.
