NTR District Selects Retailers for Liquor Shops
The NTR district in Andhra Pradesh recently held a lottery to choose private retailers for 113 liquor shops. A total of 5,825 applications were received, the highest in the state. G Srijana, the district magistrate, stated that two reserve candidates were also selected to ensure the process is completed promptly.
Statewide Liquor Policy Changes
The Andhra Pradesh government received 89,882 applications for liquor shops across the state, with the ASR district receiving 1,205 applications for 40 shops. The new liquor policy, effective from October 12, allows private retailers to sell liquor, lifting previous restrictions. This policy, lasting until 2026, has opened over 3,000 shops to the private sector.
Opposition Criticism
The YSRCP, led by Women’s Wing President Varudu Kalyani, criticized the TDP-led government’s new liquor policy. Kalyani expressed concerns about its negative impact, calling it harmful and financially motivated. She questioned the decision to privatize government-owned liquor shops and highlighted the opposition from women against this policy.
