Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], September 15: Defending Durand Cup champions NorthEast United FC (NEUFC) will begin their Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 season against newly-promoted Mohammedan SC (MSC). The match will be held at the Kishore Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata on Monday.

Mohammedan SC earned their spot in the ISL by winning the I-League 2023-24 season, while NEUFC finished seventh in the ISL last season. Mohammedan SC’s head coach, Andrey Chernyshov, is focusing on building a strong team and gaining experience in the league. He emphasized the importance of fighting spirit and improving throughout the season.

“First, we need to make a strong team for the ISL. We understand how strong this competition is. We will be playing against many good Indian and foreign players. We need to take this feeling from the ISL, the experience, and we need to fight in every match, show good football for the people, and this is the most important, which inspires us to do very well in every match,” Chernyshov said.

On the other hand, NEUFC head coach Juan Pedro Benali is looking to build on their recent success of winning the Durand Cup. Despite missing the playoffs by a narrow margin last season, Benali is determined to focus on each game as it comes.

“The feeling of winning the Durand Cup was great, but it finishes 24 hours later. We cannot live with it anymore if we want to move forward. We need to forget that. It’s great for the paper and the stats, but we just need to think about the next game,” Benali stated.

Both teams have promising Indian players in their squads. Parthib Gogoi was a standout for NEUFC last season, scoring five goals and providing four assists in 17 league appearances. Mohammedan SC will rely on Makan Chothe, who has an impressive 60% dribble success rate since the start of 2024.

Benali is optimistic about the potential of Indian players in the ISL. “There is a very good quality of Indian players in the ISL. We all need to work towards helping them look higher all the time. The sky’s the limit, and they should not stop progressing,” he concluded.
