NIA Charges Four in Assam Military Station Attack Led by ULFA (I)

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has chargesheeted four individuals in connection with the December 2023 attack on a military station in Assam by the banned group ULFA (I). The attack occurred on December 14, 2023, when two motorcycle-borne members of ULFA (I) threw grenades at the military station in Lichubari, Jorhat district. This was part of a larger plan to target army establishments across Assam.

ULFA (I) claimed responsibility for the attack the following day. The conspiracy was orchestrated from Myanmar by ULFA (I) leaders, including SS Captain Abhijeet Gogoi and chief Paresh Baruah. Another key conspirator was SS Brigadier Arunudoy Dohutia.

The NIA’s investigation led to the arrest of three suspects: Biplab Baruah, Biraj Kachari, and Achyut Gogoi. These three, along with the absconding SS Captain Aicheng Asom, have been chargesheeted under various sections of the IPC, UA(P)A, and Explosives Substance Act.

The NIA took over the Jorhat case from Assam Police, linking it to a similar attack on an Army camp in Kakopathar, Tinsukia district. Last month, the NIA also chargesheeted six individuals for the Kakopathar attack, including ULFA (I) leaders Paresh Baruah, Arunudoy Dohutia, and Abhijit Gogoi, along with Parag Borah and Bijoy Moran, who were arrested in early December 2023.
