In Gatersleben, Germany, scientists have developed a new method to study how plant roots manage nutrients and metals. Dr. Ricardo Giehl and his team created a method using fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS) combined with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). This allows them to study the concentration of minerals in different root cell types. This method helps map how roots protect sensitive cells from toxic metals while sharing essential nutrients with the rest of the plant.

Key Findings

The researchers discovered that different cell types in roots have specific mineral distributions. They found that root hairs help manage excess manganese in plants lacking iron, preventing toxic levels in the plant’s shoots. This research highlights the importance of ion transporters in managing nutrient and metal movement in plants.

Prof. Dr. Nicolaus von Wiren emphasized that this method can serve as a reference for future studies. It also opens up possibilities for combining with other techniques to better understand and improve nutrient use in plants.
