NESO Urges Amit Shah to Prevent Illegal Immigration from Bangladesh Amid Unrest
Guwahati (Assam) [India], August 7: The North East Students’ Organisation (NESO) has called on Union Home Minister Amit Shah to take action to prevent illegal immigrants from entering the North Eastern states from Bangladesh. This request comes in light of ongoing unrest in Bangladesh.
NESO, which represents student bodies from the seven North Eastern states, emphasized the need for strict border control to prevent illegal migration. The organization also requested that no Bangladeshi be granted asylum or rehabilitation in the region.
In a letter to the Union Home Minister, NESO highlighted the potential impact of the unrest in Bangladesh on the North East region, which shares a long border with Bangladesh. The letter noted that past events, such as the partition in 1947 and the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971, led to significant illegal immigration into the region, causing demographic imbalances and tensions.
NESO expressed concerns about the impact of illegal immigration on the indigenous communities in the North East, citing issues such as land grabbing, cultural assimilation, and economic competition. The organization pointed out that the native tribal population in Tripura has been reduced to a minority due to mass migration since 1947.
The letter also mentioned the historic Assam Movement, which resulted in the Assam Accord, promising to deport illegal Bangladeshis from Assam. Similar movements have taken place in Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh, demanding the deportation of foreigners.
NESO urged the government to ensure that the border between North East India and Bangladesh is thoroughly manned to detect and prevent illegal migration. The organization hopes for a swift and positive response from the government to safeguard the indigenous people of the North East.
