Among those who paid tribute were Nepal's President Ram Chandra Paudel, the Chief of Army Staff, Members of Parliament, and many citizens. Bhola Adhikari, a resident of Kathmandu, expressed gratitude for King Shah's role in unifying Nepal, stating, "He is our icon of national unity and strength."
Born on January 7, 1723, in Gorkha Palace, King Prithvi Narayan Shah ascended the throne of the Gorkha Kingdom in 1743. He initiated the unification of Nepal, expanding its borders significantly. His successors continued this expansion, further solidifying Nepal's territory.
King Shah is credited with unifying the small states, including the Kathmandu Valley, and is regarded as the creator of modern Nepal. He conquered Nuwakot in 1744 and the Kathmandu Valley in 1769, gradually annexing other principalities.
President Paudel highlighted the relevance of King Shah's teachings, known as 'Divyopadesh,' which continue to guide economic development and diplomatic relations. He emphasized the importance of remembering the contributions of past leaders in shaping Nepal into a sovereign, democratic republic.
President Paudel expressed hope that National Unity Day would inspire citizens to uphold Nepal's independence and unity, striving for prosperity and happiness. "May this day strengthen our commitment to national unity and inspire progress towards a prosperous Nepal," he added.
