NCP Leader Praful Patel Calls Vinesh Phogat’s Disqualification ‘Shocking and Disturbing’
New Delhi, August 7: NCP leader Praful Patel has expressed his concern over Vinesh Phogat’s disqualification from the women’s wrestling final at the Paris Olympics. He described the incident as ‘shocking and disturbing’ and urged the Government of India and the Indian Olympic Association to address the issue with the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
Patel questioned the IOC’s operations and the conduct of the Olympics, stating, ‘If some player has entered the tournament, all these tests should have been done before. How can you disqualify someone at the final stage? This is shocking and surprising.’
Vinesh Phogat was disqualified from the 50 kg women’s wrestling event for breaching the weight limit. She was set to compete against the United States’s Sarah Ann Hildebrandt in the Gold Medal match. Prime Minister Narendra Modi consoled Vinesh, calling her ‘a champion among champions’ and urged her to come back stronger.
Sources revealed that the Prime Minister spoke to Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President PT Usha to explore options to help Vinesh’s case and urged a strong protest regarding her disqualification.
The Indian Olympic contingent issued a statement confirming Vinesh’s disqualification due to exceeding the 50 kg weight limit by a few grams. They requested privacy for Vinesh and focused on ongoing competitions.
Despite this setback, India continues to hope for medals in other events. Athlete Avinash Sable will compete in the 3000-meter steeplechase final, Mirabai Chanu in the women’s 49 KG weightlifting category, and wrestler Antim Panghal in the Women’s Freestyle 53 KG category. India has won 3 medals so far in the shooting competition at the Paris Olympics.
