Mothercare and Reliance Brands Form Joint Venture for South Asia

Mothercare plc, a global leader in products for parents and young children, has partnered with Reliance Brands Holding UK Limited, a subsidiary of Reliance Brands Limited, to form a new joint venture. This venture will manage the Mothercare brand and its intellectual property in India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, and Bangladesh.

Under the agreement, Reliance Brands UK will hold a 51% stake, while Mothercare Global Brand Limited will retain 49%. The stake acquisition is valued at £16 million. This collaboration aims to expand Mothercare’s presence in South Asia by leveraging the strengths of both companies.

Darshan Mehta, Managing Director of Reliance Brands Limited, expressed excitement about the partnership, highlighting the brand’s trusted reputation in India and the potential for growth in the region. Reliance Brands first acquired rights to the Mothercare brand in India in 2018 and currently operates 87 stores across 25 cities, along with a strong online presence.

Clive Whiley, Chairman of Mothercare, emphasized the strengthened operations in South Asia and the renewed confidence in the joint venture’s potential. He looks forward to a closer partnership with Reliance Brands, moving beyond a franchisee relationship.
