Mixed Vehicle Demand in India: Two-Wheelers and Tractors Shine, Passenger and Commercial Vehicles Struggle

In October, the demand for passenger and commercial vehicles in India showed signs of moderation, while two-wheelers and tractors experienced positive momentum, according to a report by Motilal Oswal. Two-wheeler sales grew by 4-5% year-on-year during the festive season, although this was limited by a high comparison base from the previous year. Inventory levels for two-wheelers and passenger vehicles remain high, making the Diwali season crucial for inventory clearance.

The report noted that passenger vehicles might see a decline in sales compared to last year’s festive season. Rural sentiment has improved due to a better monsoon, potentially boosting demand, though its sustainability post-festive season is uncertain. Retail sales during the Navratri festival showed mid- to high-single-digit growth, with rural areas experiencing more subdued sales. There is hope that rural demand will increase around Diwali.

Conversely, commercial vehicle demand remained weak, with a projected year-on-year decline of about 5% in volumes during the festive period. However, there was a slight improvement from the previous month, with increased fleet utilization levels in most regions. Overall, the report highlighted mixed sentiment across vehicle categories, with two-wheelers and tractors showing resilience, while passenger and commercial vehicles face challenges as the industry approaches the critical Diwali season.
