Minister Nityanand Rai Reveals 10,145 Vacant Posts in BSF

10,145 Vacant Posts in BSF Revealed by Minister Nityanand Rai

On July 31, Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai informed the Rajya Sabha that there are 10,145 vacant posts in the Border Security Force (BSF) as of July 1. These vacancies include:

  • 387 Gazetted Officers (Group ‘A’)
  • 1,816 Subordinate Officers (Group ‘B’)
  • 7,942 Other Ranks (Group ‘C’)

The BSF is responsible for guarding 3,323 km of the India-Pakistan border and 4,096 km of the India-Bangladesh border. Rai also mentioned that 7,372 new posts were created between 2020 and 2024, with 7,210 positions created in 2024 alone. No new positions were created in 2020 and 2022.

In the last five years, 54,760 personnel have been recruited in the BSF. The current strength of the BSF is 2,55,663 against a sanctioned strength of 2,65,808. The breakdown is as follows:

  • 5,145 Gazetted Officers
  • 36,528 Subordinate Officers
  • 2,13,990 Other Ranks

Special provisions have been made for the recruitment of ex-Agniveers, including a 10% reservation for vacancies, age relaxation, and exemption from the Physical Efficiency Test (PET). The Ministry has also established a Welfare and Rehabilitation Board (WARB) to support retired Central Armed Police Forces personnel and their families.

Physical Efficiency Tests -: Physical Efficiency Tests are exercises that measure how fit and strong a person is. These tests are usually required for joining the armed forces or police.
