Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo Responds to US Tariff and Crime Allegations

In a recent statement, Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo addressed accusations from US President Donald Trump regarding Mexico's alleged ties with criminal organizations. Sheinbaum emphasized Mexico's dedication to fighting crime and drug trafficking, advocating for cooperation between neighboring countries. She stated, "Mexico does not want confrontation. We start with collaboration between neighboring countries. Mexico not only does not want fentanyl to reach the United States but anywhere."

President Trump announced tariffs on imports from Canada, Mexico, and China, citing concerns over illegal immigration and drug smuggling. In response, Sheinbaum rejected these accusations, stating, "Problems are not resolved by imposing tariffs." She proposed a collaborative approach, suggesting a working group with top public health and security teams from both countries to address shared concerns.

Sheinbaum highlighted Mexico's efforts in combating drug trafficking, noting the seizure of over 40 tons of drugs and the arrest of thousands linked to criminal groups. She stressed the importance of dialogue and cooperation, rejecting any claims of alliances with criminal organizations. She also pointed out the role of US armories in supplying weapons to these groups.

President Trump, on his social media platform, announced the tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, aiming to protect Americans from illegal immigration and drug trafficking threats.
