Mehbooba Mufti Urges India to Learn from Bangladesh’s Youth Protests
Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], August 7: People’s Democratic Party Chief, Mehbooba Mufti, has advised India to take lessons from the recent events in Bangladesh. She pointed out that the youth in Jammu and Kashmir face numerous issues and that ignoring them could lead to unrest.
Mufti stated, “Whatever has happened and is happening in Bangladesh, I think our country should take a lesson from it. When you have a huge youth population and you try to ignore them – when inflation and unemployment hit them, situations like these arise. Reservation are good for the weaker section, but it should be in proportion to the population. We should take a lesson that dictatorship doesn’t last long. When you bring policies and laws that are against the people and a threshold of patience gets breached, you have to escape like Sheikh Hasina.”
She further added, “Especially concerning Jammu & Kashmir, we should take a lesson from Bangladesh – where the youths have plenty of issues, added to that the youth feel helpless just like what happened in Bangladesh. Pressure, exploitation, and UAPA, all add to this. I think this needs to be changed. I hope the situation of Bangladesh doesn’t replicate here.”
Bangladesh is currently experiencing political instability, with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigning on August 5 following student-led protests against the quota system for government jobs. President Mohammed Shahabuddin has dissolved the parliament to form an interim administration, with Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus appointed as the head of the interim government.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar informed that there are about 19,000 Indian nationals in Bangladesh, including 9,000 students, and assured that the government is in close contact with the Indian community in Dhaka. Most of the students returned to India in July.
