Masdar Signs Major Wind Farm Agreement in Kazakhstan at COP29

Masdar’s New Wind Farm Project in Kazakhstan

Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company, known as Masdar, has signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for a 1GW wind farm in Kazakhstan’s Jambyl region. This agreement was made with the Financial Settlement Centre for Renewable Energy Sources Support LLP during COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan. Important figures present included Sungat Yessimkhanov, Kazakhstan’s Vice Minister of Energy, and Sharif Al Olama from the UAE’s Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure.

Key Signatories

The agreement was signed by Abdulla Zayed from Masdar and Gulzhan Nalibayeva from the Financial Settlement Centre. This follows an Investment Agreement with Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Energy, marking one of the largest wind farms in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).

Statements from Leaders

Masdar’s CEO, Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi, emphasized the company’s commitment to Kazakhstan’s clean energy goals, aiming for 100GW of renewable energy by 2030. Gulzhan Nalibayeva highlighted the agreement’s role in advancing Kazakhstan’s renewable infrastructure.

Project Details

This is Masdar’s first project in Kazakhstan, featuring a 600MWh Battery Energy Storage System. The project, led by Masdar with partners like W Solar and Qazaq Green Power, will start construction by early 2026. It aims to power 300,000 homes and reduce CO2 emissions by 2 million tonnes annually.

Future Goals

The wind farm supports Kazakhstan’s goal to increase renewable energy to 15% by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060, following commitments made at COP28.

Doubts Revealed

Masdar -: Masdar is a company from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) that focuses on creating clean energy, like wind and solar power, to help the environment.

Wind Farm -: A wind farm is a place where many wind turbines are set up to capture wind energy and turn it into electricity. It’s a way to produce power without polluting the air.

COP29 -: COP29 is a big meeting where countries from all over the world come together to talk about how to fight climate change and protect the environment. It stands for the 29th Conference of the Parties.

Power Purchase Agreement -: A Power Purchase Agreement is a contract where one party agrees to buy electricity from another party. In this case, Masdar will sell the electricity generated by the wind farm to Kazakhstan.

1GW -: 1GW, or 1 gigawatt, is a unit of power. It’s a lot of electricity, enough to power hundreds of thousands of homes.

Jambyl region -: The Jambyl region is an area in Kazakhstan, a country in Central Asia. It’s where the new wind farm will be built.

600MWh Battery Energy Storage System -: A 600MWh Battery Energy Storage System is a large battery setup that can store 600 megawatt-hours of electricity. It helps save energy for use when the wind isn’t blowing.

CO2 emissions -: CO2 emissions refer to the release of carbon dioxide gas into the air, which can contribute to global warming. Reducing these emissions is important for protecting the environment.

Kazakhstan’s renewable energy goals -: Kazakhstan’s renewable energy goals are plans the country has made to use more clean energy sources, like wind and solar, by the years 2030 and 2060 to help the environment.
