Mansukh Mandaviya Celebrates Indian Athletes’ Success at Paris Paralympics
The Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Mansukh Mandaviya, along with Union Minister Raksha Khadse, honored members of the Indian Paralympic contingent in New Delhi. They celebrated the athletes’ incredible achievements at the Paris 2024 Paralympics.
Government Support and Achievements
Mandaviya expressed the nation’s pride and joy, assuring continued government support for athletes and coaches. He highlighted that 50 of the 84 participants were supported through the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS), while others benefited from the Khelo India programme and National Centres of Excellence (NCOE).
India’s performance has significantly improved, with 29 medals won at the Paris 2024 Paralympics compared to 19 at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics. The event saw the highest-ever number of double podium finishes for India, with five such instances. Eleven athletes won medals in back-to-back editions, and 12 debutants won their first Paralympic medals.
Record-Breaking Performances
The event also witnessed the setting of five new records, including one world record and four Paralympic records. Mandaviya mentioned that the allocation of support staff exceeded 100 percent to meet the specific needs of para-athletes and their personal coaches.
Historic Participation
The Paris 2024 Paralympics saw historic participation by Indian athletes, with 46 participating for the first time and a record number of 32 Indian women athletes competing.
