In Imphal, Manipur, Chief Minister N Biren Singh expressed gratitude towards the state and central governments for ensuring the safe return of two youths who were allegedly abducted from Kangpokpi on September 27. The youths were safely returned to Manipur police custody, as announced by CM Singh on October 3.

Congress MP Appeals for Action

On October 2, Congress MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam wrote to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, urging for the safe release of the abducted youths. MP Akoijam highlighted the ongoing violence in Manipur, which began on May 3, 2023, and has resulted in numerous casualties and missing persons from both the Meitei and Kuki communities.

Details of the Abduction

According to MP Akoijam, three youths from Thoubal district went missing on September 27 while traveling for an SSC GD recruitment test. They were allegedly abducted by suspected armed members of the Kuki community. While one youth was rescued by the Assam Rifles, the other two remain in custody.

Demands and Concerns

The abductors reportedly demand the release of Mark T Haokip and the transfer of Kuki prisoners. MP Akoijam emphasized that such demands are acts of terrorism and urged for immediate action to ensure the safe return of the remaining youths.

Background of the Violence

The violence in Manipur erupted following a rally by the All Tribals Students Union (ATSU) protesting the inclusion of the Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribe category.
