Mahesh Bhupathi Praises Women’s Sports and Launches SG Pipers in Hockey India League
Legendary Indian tennis player Mahesh Bhupathi highlighted the significant role of women’s sports in India, describing it as an “incredible revolution” that will continue for the next decade. He made these remarks at the launch of SG Pipers, a new franchise in the Hockey India League (HIL), which is making a comeback after a seven-year hiatus.
SG Sports, Media & Entertainment, part of the APL Apollo Group, announced the launch of the franchise. Bhupathi, who serves as the CEO of SG Sports, emphasized the importance of supporting women’s sports, citing athletes like Sania Mirza, Saina Nehwal, PV Sindhu, Manika Batra, and Manu Bhaker as key figures in this movement.
The HIL 2024-25 season is scheduled from late December 2024 to early February 2025, featuring 8 men’s teams and 6 women’s teams. Bhupathi expressed excitement about the SG Pipers team, which includes legendary Indian goalkeeper PR Sreejesh as the Director of Hockey. Sreejesh, who retired from international hockey after winning two Olympic bronze medals, is eager to contribute to the sport’s growth.
