Maharashtra’s Pyare Khan Supports Changes to Waqf Board Act for Muslim Development
Nagpur (Maharashtra) [India], August 5: Maharashtra State Minorities Commission Chairman Pyare Khan has expressed his support for the proposed amendments to the Waqf Board Act, stating that these changes are aimed at the development of Muslims. He criticized those protesting the amendments, accusing them of spreading false narratives and not genuinely caring about the Muslim community.
Pyare Khan emphasized that the amendments would benefit Muslim women and ensure their rights. He urged the Muslim Personal Law Board to consider the positive aspects of the reforms and not oppose them. He also highlighted that those who misused Waqf properties are now facing difficulties.
According to sources, the central government is considering 32-40 amendments to the Waqf Board Act, which was first passed in 1954 and later revised in 1995 and 2013. The proposed changes may require the Waqf Board to register its properties with the District Collector’s office for evaluation.
However, AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi criticized the government, claiming that the amendments would undermine the autonomy of the Waqf Board and interfere with religious freedom. On the other hand, BJP leader Shazia Ilmi supported the amendments, citing corruption within the Waqf Board and the need for reform.
All India Muslim Personal Law Board member Maulana Khalid Rasheed Farangi Mahali called for stakeholder consultation before making any changes. Meanwhile, Imam Umer Ahmed Ilyasi, Chief Imam of the All India Imam Organization, supported the amendments, stating that they are necessary and should not be politicized.
