Lt Gen Upendra Dwivedi to Become New Indian Army Chief

New Delhi [India], June 29: Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi will take over as the next Chief of the Indian Army on June 30, 2024, succeeding General Manoj Pande. Lt Gen Dwivedi will be the 30th Chief of the Army Staff and is assuming the role during a period of significant modernization and structural reforms within the force.

Lt Gen Dwivedi has had a long tenure as the Northern Army Commander, gaining extensive experience in operations along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh. Born on July 1, 1964, he was commissioned into the Jammu & Kashmir Rifles of the Indian Army on December 15, 1984. His nearly 40-year career includes a variety of command, staff, instructional, and foreign appointments.

His command roles include leading the 18 Jammu & Kashmir Rifles Battalion, 26 Sector Assam Rifles Brigade, Inspector General of Assam Rifles (East), and 9 Corps. As a Lieutenant General, he has held significant positions such as Director General Infantry.

Lt Gen Dwivedi is an alumnus of Sainik School Rewa, National Defence College, and the US Army War College. He has also completed courses at the Defence Services Staff College in Wellington and the Army War College in Mhow. Additionally, he was honored as a ‘Distinguished Fellow’ in a prestigious course at the US Army War College in Carlisle, USA. He holds an M. Phil in Defence and Management Studies and two Master’s degrees in Strategic Studies and Military Science.
