In Cartagena, Spain, Indian company Larsen & Toubro and its Spanish partner Navantia demonstrated the integration of a critical Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) system on a Spanish Navy submarine. This is part of a Rs 70,000 crore deal to supply the Indian Navy with six new submarines equipped with AIP systems, allowing them to remain submerged for up to three weeks.
Navantia's Chief of Commercial and Business Development, Jose Manual Mondejar, highlighted the capabilities of their third-generation AIP system, which is already in use by the Spanish Navy. He emphasized that the system meets all the requirements set by the Indian Navy, eliminating the need for reengineering.
The Indian Navy has conducted trials of both the Spanish and German AIP systems, with evaluations submitted to the Defence Ministry. A Technical Oversight Committee has been formed to review these reports, and the deal is expected to be finalized soon after government review.
