Larsen and Toubro’s (L&T) Precision Engineering Systems business has won an important order to partially construct two Fleet Support Ships (FSS) for the Indian Navy. This project is in collaboration with Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL). The Indian Navy had signed a contract with HSL in August 2023 to design and build five FSS.

Fleet Support Ships are special naval vessels that help provide logistics and material support to naval forces at sea. These ships will be over 220 meters long and weigh around 45,000 tons, making them some of the largest in the Indian Naval Fleet.

This project supports the Government of India’s ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ vision, which aims to make India more self-reliant. The ships will be built in domestic shipyards, with both L&T and HSL working together to meet tight deadlines. This teamwork will help quickly grow the Indian Naval fleet and boost economic and technological progress in India’s maritime sector.

L&T has a strong history in defense shipbuilding. Since its first order in March 2010, the company has designed, built, and delivered over 70 defense vessels, often ahead of schedule. The two new Fleet Support Ships will be constructed at L&T’s state-of-the-art shipyard in Kattupalli, near Chennai. This shipyard is one of the most modern in India and follows global technological standards.

Larsen and Toubro is a large Indian multinational company with a revenue of USD 27 billion. It is involved in various sectors, including PC Projects, Hi-Tech Manufacturing, and Services, and operates in many countries. The company is known for its customer-focused approach and high-quality standards, which have helped it maintain leadership in its main business areas for over 80 years.
