Lalon Fakir Commemoration Cancelled in Bangladesh
In Bangladesh, a planned event to honor the philosopher and Sufi saint Lalon Fakir was cancelled due to objections from Islamic groups. The event, organized by Madhupur Lalon Sangha, was to be held in Madhupur, Tangail district, but was called off after opposition from Hefazat-e-Islam, the country's largest Islamic group. The festival aimed to celebrate the 134th death anniversary of Lalon Fakir.
Previously, Lalon Festivals were held without issues, but this time, the organizers expressed regret for the cancellation due to unavoidable circumstances. The Bibartan Cultural Centre condemned the incident, with General Secretary Mofijur Rahman Laltu criticizing the Islamic parties for not allowing the event to proceed.
Lalon Fakir, also known as Lalon Shah, was a Bengali spiritual leader and social reformer who influenced many, including Rabindranath Tagore. His philosophy promotes humanity and rejects caste and creed distinctions.
In a related incident, a mob attack occurred at the Amar Ekushey Book Fair in Dhaka, targeting a stall displaying a book by Taslima Nasreen. The Chief Adviser of Bangladesh's Interim Government, Muhammad Yunus, condemned the attack, emphasizing the importance of protecting citizens' rights and the country's laws. The government has instructed police and security agencies to investigate and prevent further violence.
