Lahore and Karachi Among World’s Most Polluted Cities
Two cities in Pakistan, Lahore and Karachi, have been listed among the world’s most polluted cities. Lahore ranks second with an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 201, while Karachi is eighth with an AQI of 170. Recently, Lahore’s AQI soared to a dangerous 700, posing severe health risks. In response, the Punjab government has implemented a “green lockdown” in smog hotspots, targeting places like barbecue joints and marriage halls. However, experts criticize these measures as inadequate.
Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb announced that 11 smog hotspots have been identified in Lahore, with Shimla Hill being the most affected. The “green lockdown” began on Thursday. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz stressed the need for cooperation with Indian Punjab to tackle the smog crisis, suggesting cross-border efforts as a solution. On October 29, Lahore’s AQI reached 708, making it the most polluted city globally at that time.
