In Kurram district, Pakistan, efforts to resolve tensions and demilitarize the area have hit a roadblock. A grand jirga, a traditional assembly of leaders, was held to negotiate peace and reopen crucial roads. However, the meeting failed to reach an agreement on the surrender of heavy weapons, a key condition set by the government. The absence of key members and unresolved disagreements led to a lack of quorum, preventing the signing of a peace agreement.
Local tribal elders and Kohat Division Commissioner Moatasim Billah Shah attended the jirga, but no breakthrough was achieved. The main issue is the surrender of heavy weapons, which is necessary for reopening the roads. One party suggested submitting weapons to the government, but this was not accepted by all.
Meanwhile, the provincial government has launched a helicopter service to deliver essential supplies, such as medicines, across the district. Provincial Health Adviser Ehtesham Ali reported that over 16,000 patients have received treatment at Parachinar DHQ Hospital since December 13. Despite these efforts, protests and road blockages continue, causing unrest in the region.
