Kevin Pietersen Criticizes Pakistan Cricket for Gary Kirsten’s Departure

Former England cricketer Kevin Pietersen has expressed his disappointment over the resignation of Gary Kirsten as the head coach of Pakistan’s white-ball cricket team. Kirsten, a former South African batter, stepped down just six months into his role, which he began in April 2024. Pietersen took to social media to question Pakistan Cricket’s decision, highlighting Kirsten’s impressive coaching resume.

“How can Pakistan Cricket lose Gary Kirsten with his resume in coaching? One step forward the last few weeks and two steps back today! Stop doing it to yourself. Too much talent to keep doing this kind of stuff!” Pietersen wrote on X.

Kirsten’s resignation comes just a week before Pakistan’s white-ball tour of Australia, which starts on November 4. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has announced that Test coach Jason Gillespie will temporarily take over Kirsten’s duties for the tour. Gillespie, who joined the team alongside Kirsten, recently led Pakistan to a historic Test series win over England.

Kirsten’s tenure included the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, where Pakistan exited early after losses to India and the USA. The team was preparing for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, the first ICC event Pakistan will host in nearly 30 years. The squad is set to depart for Australia, with the first group leaving on October 28 and the rest on October 29. After the Australia tour, Pakistan will head to Zimbabwe for another series.
