Introduction to Learning on Vijayadashmi

In Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, a special Vidyarambham ceremony was held at the Raj Bhavan to introduce children to the world of learning on Vijayadashmi. Governor Arif Mohammed Khan participated by helping young children write their first letters. This event marks the end of the nine-day Navaratri festival.

Tradition and Rituals

Vidyarambham, observed on Vijayadashmi, is a traditional ceremony where scholars and respected figures guide children, usually aged two to three, in writing their first letters. The children write ‘HariSree’ on rice-filled platters or have it traced on their tongues with a golden ring.

Participation of Shashi Tharoor

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor also took part in a Vidyarambham ceremony at the Saraswati temple in Thiruvananthapuram. He emphasized the importance of this ritual in devotion to Goddess Saraswati, where children learn their first letters as part of the Navratri celebrations.

Other Celebrations

The ceremony was also held at the Dakshina Mookambika Temple in North Paravur, Ernakulam, where children were initiated into writing on Vijayadashmi. Vidyarambham, meaning the initiation of knowledge, involves writing on a plate of rice and tracing letters on the child’s tongue with a gold ring, symbolizing the start of learning.
