On January 17, a convoy carrying 200 tons of wheat flour was dispatched from Jordan to Gaza as part of the Flour for Humanity Program. This initiative, led by the Islamic Organization for Food Security (IOFS) and supported by Kazakhstan, aims to address severe food shortages in Gaza. The convoy, consisting of 12 trucks, is expected to reach the Kerem Shalom crossing in two days, where the UN World Food Programme will help distribute the flour to nearly 8,000 households.
Berik Aryn, Director General of IOFS, and Talgat Shaldanbay, Kazakh Ambassador to Jordan, attended the dispatch ceremony. Kazakhstan's leadership has been crucial in supporting this humanitarian mission. The ongoing conflict in Gaza has caused massive destruction, displacing millions and damaging infrastructure.
The program, in partnership with the Jordan Hashemite Charity Organization (JHCO), secured contributions from Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Bangladesh, and Azerbaijan. JHCO is working to establish a sustainable aid corridor through Jordan, as the Egyptian route has been suspended by Israeli authorities.
The ceremony coincided with a temporary ceasefire in Gaza after prolonged hostilities. By the end of 2024, 1.84 million people in Gaza faced hunger, with 133,000 at risk of starvation. Aryn expressed gratitude to JHCO, UN partners, and donors, urging continued support for future aid convoys.
