Karnataka MLA Calls for Nationalization of Waqf Assets
Basanagouda Patil Yatnal, the MLA from Vijayapura in Karnataka, has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging the nationalization of Waqf assets. He alleges that the Waqf board is involved in “blatant violation” by claiming lands belonging to farmers, temples, and mutts. Yatnal shared his concerns on social media, emphasizing that all citizens should have equal rights to land and that Waqf’s activities should be unbiased and free from religious discrimination.
Previously, BJP MP Tejasvi Surya accused the Waqf Board of encroaching on farmers’ lands with the Karnataka government’s support. Surya highlighted that these actions are conducted under the Chief Minister’s instructions, affecting thousands of acres. He noted that farmers have reported sudden ownership transfers of their lands to the Waqf Board without notice.
In response, Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge criticized Surya, asserting that the state government is dedicated to protecting farmers’ properties. Kharge also questioned the BJP’s past efforts in safeguarding temples, reaffirming the current government’s commitment to protecting temples and public properties.
