Karnataka Minister MB Patil Criticizes BJP Over Waqf Land Controversy
Karnataka Minister MB Patil has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of engaging in “political drama” amid a dispute over Waqf properties. He mentioned that the chairman of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) is visiting Vijayapura and that the BJP is attempting to stage a political drama.
Minister Patil referred to a 2019 statement by former Minority Affairs Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, who said that GIS mapping of Waqf properties was being carried out effectively by the State Waqf Board, IIT Roorkee, and AMU Aligarh. Patil criticized the BJP for their current actions, which he sees as contradictory to their previous stance.
The JPC Chairman, Jagdambika Pal, is scheduled to meet with protesting farmers in Bijapur and Hubballi on November 7. This visit follows a controversy over notices designating farmers’ land as Waqf land. Several BJP leaders are protesting, and BJP MP Tejasvi Surya has written to the JPC Chairman about the issue.
Reacting to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s decision to retract all notices related to Waqf land, Jagdambika Pal stated that this move acknowledges the government’s mistake in issuing these notices. The BJP alleges that Waqf designations were added to land records without proper notification, causing concern among farmers about losing ancestral land.
On Monday, CM Siddaramaiah announced that he has instructed officials to stop issuing notices to farmers and to withdraw those already issued, addressing concerns over the potential loss of land.
