Karimabad Underpass Project in Karachi Faces Delays and Rising Costs

The Karimabad underpass project in Karachi, Pakistan, has been facing significant delays and increased costs. Originally budgeted at PKR 1.4 billion, the cost has now escalated to PKR 3.8 billion. The project, managed by the Karachi Development Authority (KDA), has been delayed due to slow fund release from the provincial government and the need for extensive excavation to protect an underground water line.

Residents have raised concerns about the heavy dust and transportation issues caused by the prolonged construction. Only 30% of the project has been completed in 17 months, with just 300 meters of the 1,080-meter underpass finished. The Environmental Impact Assessment report's late approval also contributed to the delay, requiring the KDA to address issues like traffic management and community safety.

Despite these challenges, work is now ongoing around the clock, with hopes of completion by August 25, provided funds continue to be released on time. The construction has affected local businesses and residents, with narrow alternative routes causing traffic congestion and safety concerns.

Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has expressed serious concerns over the project's slow progress, highlighting the need for timely completion to avoid further hardships for the local population.
