Karachi Lawyers Protest Against Police Inaction

Background

In Karachi, Pakistan, lawyers took to the streets to protest against the Mehmoodabad police’s refusal to register a case concerning the alleged torture of their colleague, Inayat Jatoi, and his family. The protest began on Wednesday afternoon on Korangi Road near Kala Pull.

Details of the Protest

The Karachi Bar Association (KBA) leaders, including General Secretary Ikhtiar Ali Channa and President Amir Nawaz Waraich, announced that lawyers would abstain from court proceedings on Thursday. They also declared a ban on police entry into city courts. The Sindh Bar Council (SBC) supported the protest, condemning the attack on Jatoi and calling for a full-day strike across Sindh courts.

Demands and Reactions

The SBC acting secretary, M Rustam Bhutto, demanded immediate action from the Sindh police officials to lodge an FIR and arrest those responsible for the attack. The protest escalated when lawyers blocked Sharea Faisal, a major road, in the evening, demanding the removal of the Mehmoodabad police station’s SHO for ignoring their demands.
