Junior Doctors Protest for Better Hospital Security in Kolkata

In Kolkata, junior doctors are holding a 12-hour hunger strike to demand improved security in hospitals. This protest follows the tragic death of a woman trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. Dr. Abid Hasan, a junior doctor, expressed disappointment over the lack of communication from the government and criticized it for not fulfilling promises, such as installing CCTV cameras in hospitals.

Dr. Hasan highlighted ongoing threats to students and the need for transparency regarding hospital resources. He emphasized the importance of knowing the availability of beds across various departments to prevent unnecessary suffering. The protest aims to bring attention to these issues and encourage dialogue with authorities.

Dr. Soumodip Roy, another junior doctor, stated that the hunger strike has been ongoing for nearly two days and will continue until their demands are met. These demands include the removal of the health secretary and increased police protection in hospitals. A rally is also planned, with participation from other colleges and junior doctors.

Dr. Roy criticized the state government’s response to their peaceful protest, highlighting the importance of allowing democratic movements. Dr. Tauheed, another protester, outlined the schedule for the hunger strike and rally, inviting anyone who wishes to join.

The junior doctors have given the Bengal state government a 24-hour ultimatum to address their concerns, warning of an indefinite hunger strike if their demands are not met.
