Jamia Milia Islamia Campus Clash During Diwali Celebrations
On October 22, a scuffle broke out at Jamia Milia Islamia University in New Delhi during Diwali celebrations. The Jamia Milia Islamia Alumni Association of Minorities (JMIAAM) expressed concern over the incident, alleging it created a Hinduphobic atmosphere and raised safety concerns for non-Muslim students.
The altercation occurred near gate 7 around 7:30-8 pm when ABVP-affiliated students were setting up Diwali decorations. Another group of students disrupted the event, leading to a clash. A video of the incident went viral on social media, showing students in a verbal spat while security personnel attempted to calm the situation.
The JMI unit of the Student Federation of India accused ABVP of attacking students under the guise of Diwali celebrations. Similarly, the Congress-backed NSUI blamed ABVP for the violence. However, ABVP’s national media convenor, Ashutosh Singh, denied these allegations, stating that their event was peaceful until disrupted by another group chanting slogans like ‘Long live Palestine.’
Despite the commotion, no FIR has been registered, and police were deployed outside the campus to maintain peace.
