Jamaica’s Prime Minister Andrew Holness Visits India, Supports India’s UN Bid

New Delhi, India – Jamaica’s Prime Minister Andrew Holness has announced Jamaica’s intention to join the Global Fuel Alliance and support India’s candidature for a United Nations Security Council non-permanent member for 2028-2029.

Global Bio Fuel Alliance

During a special briefing, Jaideep Mazumdar, Secretary East, Ministry of External Affairs, stated that Jamaica will join the Global Bio Fuel Alliance, led by India. Jamaica is already a member of the Solar Alliance and CDRI.

Support for India’s Digital Infrastructure

Prime Minister Holness praised India’s advancements in digital public infrastructure and expressed interest in benefiting from India’s flagship products like UPI and Aadhaar. Both countries agreed to cooperate in education, focusing on curriculum technology and teacher recruitment, especially in STEM areas.

Cooperation in Defence and Capacity Building

Holness appreciated India’s contributions to capacity building, particularly in defence, where three Jamaican officer cadets are training in India. Coast guard capacity building was also identified as a cooperation area.

Historic Visit and Bilateral Discussions

This visit marks the first-ever bilateral visit of a Jamaican Prime Minister to India. Holness and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi discussed various issues, including digitalisation, health, sports, defence, education, trade, and culture. They witnessed the exchange of Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) in several sectors.

Special Gestures and Future Plans

As a special gesture, a street in front of the Jamaican High Commission was named Jamaica Marg. Holness will also visit Sarnath and Varanasi to witness the Ganga Aarti and the parliament complex.
