Israel’s Netanyahu Urges UN to Withdraw Peacekeepers from Lebanon Amid Hezbollah Threat

In a recent address, Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called on United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to remove UN peacekeeping forces from southern Lebanon. Netanyahu expressed concerns over the safety of UNIFIL soldiers, stating that their presence has made them hostages to Hezbollah, a terrorist group backed by Iran.

Netanyahu emphasized the ongoing conflict, describing it as a ‘war of redemption’ against Iran’s axis of evil. He highlighted Israel’s military successes in Lebanon, including the elimination of Hezbollah leader Nasrallah and the destruction of the group’s weapons and command centers. Netanyahu clarified that Israel’s fight is against Hezbollah, not the Lebanese people.

He urged the UN to withdraw UNIFIL from Hezbollah strongholds to prevent further endangerment of both UN and Israeli soldiers. This appeal follows an incident where two Indonesian peacekeepers were injured by Israeli tank fire near a UNIFIL observation tower in Naqoura, Lebanon.

The UN Interim Force in Lebanon was established in 1978 to confirm Israeli withdrawal and assist in restoring peace. Netanyahu also addressed the situation in Gaza, reaffirming Israel’s commitment to eliminating Hamas and securing hostages’ release.

US President Joe Biden has shown support for Israel, condemning Iran’s missile attack and advocating for a diplomatic resolution to the conflict.
