Israel’s Minister Idit Silman Pushes for Urgent Waste Management Order

Israel’s Minister of Environmental Protection, Idit Silman, is promoting an urgent emergency order to address issues in the waste management sector. The goal is to regulate and improve waste treatment according to the Ministry’s policies.

Silman has appealed to the Ministers of Finance, Interior, and Economy to support this initiative by instructing relevant parties to expedite the process. The temporary order will allow the Ministry of Environmental Protection to declare waste treatment services as essential. This will grant the Ministry powers to manage operational aspects, including fair service pricing, to prevent environmental hazards.

Silman stated, “Currently, the Ministry of Environmental Protection does not have the legal powers and tools intended to ensure the provision of services in the field of waste. Therefore, additional powers must be created that will enable the provision of services and proper functional continuity in the field.”

The proposed legislative amendment, part of an interim order, aims to ensure the Ministry can provide basic waste management services to citizens until permanent legislation is established.
