Tehran, Iran – Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is set to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan. This meeting occurs as Israel targets Hezbollah in Lebanon. Both leaders will attend an international summit celebrating poet Magtymguly Pyragy’s 300th birth anniversary.

During their meeting, Putin and Pezeshkian will discuss bilateral issues and the escalating situation in West Asia, according to Presidential Aide Yury Ushakov. Other meetings with leaders from Tajikistan and Turkmenistan are also planned for Pezeshkian.

Recently, Russia’s Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin met with Pezeshkian and Iran’s First Vice President Mohammad Reza Aref. Despite being historical rivals, Iran has supported Russia in its conflict with Ukraine since 2022. The U.S. confirmed Iran’s transfer of Fath 360 missiles to Russia, which have a range of about 75 miles. Iranian training of Russian personnel on these missiles has also been reported.

While the specifics of what Iran received in return for the missiles are unclear, intelligence sharing is speculated. Iran is interested in advanced Russian military technology, such as Su-35 jets and S-400 systems.

The summit in Ashgabat, titled “Interconnection of Times and Civilizations: The Foundation of Peace and Development,” will host leaders from over 10 countries and international organizations like the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and UNESCO.
